Making Your Clothes Last Longer

Extending the lifecycle of your garments is a huge part of being environmentally conscious. Wondering how to keep your clothing nice over a long period of time? Here are some eco-friendly tips we found.

  • Dry cleaning is expensive and uses harmful chemicals. Hang the item in the bathroom while you shower for a free and safe alternative, and let the steam refresh it.

  • Detergent is harmful to the environment, and it makes clothing dull and stiff. Use ½ prescribed detergent and ½ cup of baking soda, which is a detergent booster. It is just as clean, doesn't damage your clothes, and is better for the environment!

  • To prevent fading on dark clothes, wash them inside out to preserve their color. The same goes for t-shirts – turning them inside out will prevent the print from cracking or fading.

  • Ironing tip - Most people set their irons too high, which causes shrinkage or burning. Set the iron one or two below the recommended setting. Irons emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, so it’s better not to use them at all, but this works great if you have to.

  • Learn basic mending - if a strap comes loose or a button falls off, don’t throw the shirt out! Mending is relaxing, saves money, and promotes reusing! Quickly sew a patch while you watch TV: it’s easy! (Pro tip: if you go to a hotel, take their free sewing kits with you).

  • Shake out your clothes before you hang them in your closet, and make sure to give them space. This will prevent creasing so you don't even have to iron!
